CGNIE Memorial Scholarship Fund

The CGNIE Memorial Scholarship Fund provides for two educational scholarships annually. The LaKish Hayworth Memorial Scholarship Award for the Arts & The Larry Macy Memorial Scholarship Award for General Education. The eligibility requirements for each award are identical in every aspect except that of the field of study being pursued and is listed below. The application process for each award is, in turn, identical and applicants only need to complete the scholarship application provided and identify in such application their specific educational goals and which individual scholarship they are applying for. Current 2018 timeline is slated to award one scholarship at CGNIE’s Annual Performance Gala & Coronation on April 21st, 2018 and additionally at Sacramento Rainbow Festival on September 2nd, 2018.

Eligibility:
Applicants must reside in or plan to attend a university, college or vocational school in one of the following Counties within CGNIE’s territories: Alpine, Amador, Colusa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba. Applicants must be enrolled in the 12th grade of high school or in a university, college, or a qualified vocational school, or intend to be so enrolled in September 2017. The student must submit a fully completed scholarship application. Applications that are not fully completed will be disqualified. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

La Kish Hayworth Memorial Scholarship Award for the Arts:
The purpose of the La Kish Hayworth Memorial Scholarship Award is to motivate and assist Greater Sacramento’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and other supportive “community ally” students in pursuing and completing an educational degree and/or further study in the performing or visual arts.

Larry Macy Memorial Scholarship Award for General Education:
The Larry Macy Memorial Scholarship Award exists to provide financial support and assistance to Greater Sacramento’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and other supportive “community ally” students in pursuing and completing an educational degree in any field of study.

Application Deadline:
Scholarship Applications intended for a Spring 2018 Award must be submitted by March 15th, 2018. Spring 2018 Scholarships will be awarded at CGNIE’s Annual Performance Gala & Coronation on April 21st, 2018. Attendance by awardees is not required for acceptance of a scholarship, but is strenuously recommended.

Scholarship Applications intended for a Fall 2018 Award must be submitted by July 25th, 2018. Fall 2018 Scholarships will be awarded at Sacramento Rainbow Festival on September 2nd, 2018. Attendance by awardees is not required for acceptance of a scholarship, but is strenuously recommended.

Awards and Conditions:
Scholarship winners will be notified on or by April 2nd for the Spring of 2018 recipients. For Fall 2018 recipients, Award winners will be notified on or before August 15th, 2018. At least one scholarship will be awarded, of no less than $500 for the 2018 season. Scholarship recipients are strongly encouraged to attend the Award Ceremony at each event that their scholarship will be presented; in order to be formally introduced, presented with their scholarship award, and to make brief remarks if desired.

Scholarship recipients agree that CGNIE may post their photographs, names, goals and objectives on CGNIE’s website.

An applicant may, without any adverse impact on the consideration of his/her application, indicate in writing on the application that any award remain confidential. In such event, attendance at Sacramento’s Rainbow Festival will not be required, the recipient will not be identified by name at the Festival, and CGNIE will not place that recipient’s information on CGNIE’s website. However, CGNIE cannot further guarantee confidentiality.

Selection:
Scholarship award decisions are made by the Scholarship Committee of CGNIE’s Memorial Scholarship Fund. Finalists will be selected based on the following criteria:

> Academic achievement
> Life experiences and ambitions
> History of involvement with the LGBT community or in related issues and activities
> Quality of written expression
> Financial need or necessity
